The bonding and strong interlinking relationship helps to establish a milestone of progress. Peace – a very strong emotions defining development for every nation. But as the development increase, some anti-peace elements arose with new threats. So it become important for every nation to demolish the evil power and maintain the harmony.

Every country need defence system to provide security against threats. With this aim India is also equipped with it shield- DRDO( DEFENCE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION) a premier agency charged with military research and development. It was formed in 1958 and give huge contribution in protecting India from any danger.

Before we get into India’s missile strength in detail let’s drive into the intro and history of in India..

Introduction

Missile is an airborne range weapon capable of self propelled flight added usually by propellant, jet engine or rocket motor. Missile system usually have five major component- target system, guidance system, flight system, engine and warhead. They are classified into seven main types.

Major categories of missiles

1) Surface-to-air missiles
2) Air-to-Air missile
3) Surface-to-Surface missile
4) Ballistic missile
5) Cruise missile
6) Submarine launched missile
7) Anti-tank missile

With an amalgamation of science, technology and human resource. India has marked success in developing the most lethal and advanced missile system in the world.

HISTORY

From 18th century, India lead its potential towards the use of missile when Tipu Sultan used it in the war of Mysore. After then it became a need for the nation that we must have our own tech based Indian defence system.

With this aim Government of India launched Integrated Guided Missiles Development Programme in 1983. Prithvi was the first missile to be developed under this program.

TYPES

1) SURFACE TO AIR –

A missile that is launch from ground to hit on aircrafts or other missile to destroy it. Some includes:-

Trishul-a short range surface to air missile. It has a range of about 9 kms.

Akash-medium range surface to air missile. It has a range of 30-35 km and travel with the speed of 2.5 Mach .

2)AIR TO AIR –

AAM missile is a powerful warfare missile. It is mounted on an aircraft and is used to destroy and airborne targets.

MICA– Missile for Interception for Combat for Auto Defense. It is ranged to 80 km and capable of lock on after launch.

Astra– Beyond Visual Range Air to Air Missile( BVRAAM) technology enables the fighter pilots to shoot precisely at enemy targets it has a range of 80-110 kms.

3) SURFACE TO SURFACE –

Missile that is launch from ground to strike land or sea targets. It is fired from handheld vehicles are from ship- ground installation . In this category India has a remarkable range of missiles including:-

AGNI-I– it is a medium range single stage ballistic missile developed after Kargil war. It has a range of 700-1250 kms. It can be launched from transport erector launcher/rail mobile.

AGNI-II – It is a medium range ballistic missile with two solid fuel stage and post boost vehicle. With range of 2000 to 3000 km and is capable of carrying 1000 kg load.

AGNI-III – Intermediate range ballistic missile inducted into service in 2011. It has a range of 3000 kms. It is capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

AGNI-IV– known as Agni 2 prime. It is a multi stage composite rocket motor Intermediate Range ballistic missile (IRBM) with range of 4000 km and accuracy of <100 m.

PRITHVI I– It is the first indigenously developed ballistic missile. It is tactical surface to surface single stage look at fuel ballistic missile having warhead of 1000 km and range 150 km it has accuracy of 10-50m.

AGNI-V– It is a land based nuclear capable Intercontinental Ballistic Missile of range more than 7000 km it is a three stage road mobile canisters. It has a maximum speed of 25 Mach and accuracy less than 10 m. It is equipped with the MIRV capable of carrying multiple warhead making in India’s most powerful missile.

PRITHVI II-it is single stage surface to surface Short Range Ballistic missile(SRBM). It has a range of 350 km and can carry 1 ton payload.

DHANUSH-It is an Indian short range ship launch ballistic missile. It is third Variant of PRITHVI missile and useful for practical nuclear weapon. It has a range of 350-600 KM.

SHAURYA– it is a cannister launched hypersonic tactical missile. It has a range of 700-1900 KM and can carry 200-1000 kg payload of conventional or nuclear warhead.

PRAHAAR– an Indian solid fuel road mobile technical ballistic missile of range 150 km and accuracy 10 m It has a maximum speed of Mach 4.

4) CRUISE MISSILE –

A guided missile used against terrestrial or naval targets that remains in atmosphere and fly major portion of flat path at an approx constant speed. They are capable of travelling at high sustanity, supersonic and hypersonic . Major difference between cruise missile and ballistic missile is that – Cruise missile can fly at low altitude and follow flexible path and precise strikes while ballistic missiles follow high arching trajectory before tracking target.

BRAHMOS
The BrahMos is a medium-range ramjet supersonic cruise missile that can be Launched from Submarines, Ships, Fighter Aircraft or TEL.It has a range of 500km and a maximum speed of 3 mach.

BRAHMOS II-It is a hypersonic cruise missile currently under joint development by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia. Testing was planned to start in 2020, but has been delayed. But it will be soon to be in service.

NIRBHAY-Nirbhay is a long range, all-weather, subsonic Cruise Missile. It is powered by a solid rocket booster for take off. It has a range of about 1500 km and is capable of delivering 24 different types of warheads depending on mission requirements between 200 and 300 kg.

5) SUBMARINE LAUNCHED MISSILE-

These missiles are capable of being launched from submarines. Modern variants usually deliver multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs), each of which carries a nuclear warhead and allows a single launched missile to strike several targets.

K-15 (SAGARIKA) -It is an Indian SLBM. It has a range of almost 750km and accuracy of <10m. It can be launched from arihant type submarines and has a top speed of 7.5 mach. It has NAVIC guidance system for navigation control .

K-4-K-4 is a nuclear capable Intermediate-range submarine-launched ballistic missile developed by the DRDO to strengthen the Arihant-class submarines. The missile has a maximum range of about 4000 km.

K-5-It is an underdevelopment program of Submarine launched ballistic missile. It is a solid fueled missile , and expected to have a range of 5500-6000km.

6) BALLISTIC MISSILES –

These missiles uses projectile motion to deliver warheads on a target. These weapons are powered only during relatively brief periods—most of the flight is unpowered. Ballistic missiles differs in range; short-range ballistic missiles (SRBM) stay within the Earth’s atmosphere, while intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) are launched on a sub-orbital flight. India has a wide range of ballistic missiles that fuels its defence shield. Prithvi , Agni-IV, K-missile family and Prahaar are among these ballistic missiles mentioned above . Others are:

SURYA– The Surya missile is a speculated ICBM being developed by DRDO of India. Its operational range is beyond 16,000 Km, covering the entire earth.

PRALAY-It is a short range canisteried ballistic missile capable of carrying 500-1000kg payload to a range of 350-500km . It has an accuracy of <10m and can be launched from tata transporter.

7) ANTI TANK MISSILES –

An anti-tank missile, is a guided missile primarily designed to hit and destroy heavily armored military vehicles. ATGMs range in size from shoulder-launched weapons, which can be transported by a single soldier, to larger tripod-mounted weapons, which need a squad or team to operate, transport and fire, to vehicle and aircraft mounted missile systems.

DRDO ANTI TANK MISSILE-The DRDO Anti-Tank Missile is a first generation wire-guided anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) developed in India by DRDL, a part of (DRDO). It has a subsonic speed up to (91 m/s) with a range of 1.6 km.

NAG-It is a third generation anti tank guided missile. Also named as PROSPINA for land variant , nag has a range of 500m-20km depending of variant.

AMOGHA-It is a second generation anti tank missile having an operational range of 2.8 km. It is currently under development by Research and development division of Bharat dynamic limited .

As seen already from above data , it is clear that India also stands with the group of most secured nation. Government of India focus on equipping more advancement to Defence system by allocating a budget of 6.2 lakh crore rupees to defence ministry.
